The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) managing director has ordered an inquiry into the alleged involvement of its Birmingham airport manager in corruption and misuse of authority, PIA officials told Pakistan Today on Thursday. PIA MD Junaid Yunas asked PIA Customer Services Director Mazhar Kiyani to initiate an investigation into the complaints against Manager Sultan Mir as well as his deputy Rifaqt Zaman and submit a comprehensive report within two weeks. PIA sources in London told Pakistan Today that PIA bosses had received a number of complaints from overseas Pakistanis against Mir and Zaman. “The Pakistan High Commission in the UK has also written to the PIA management about the corruption of PIA Birmingham Airport staff,” the sources said. According to a report by the Pakistan High Commission in the UK, Rasheedullah, Mir’s front man, had been involved in corruption, causing huge losses to the national carrier.
According to the report, excess luggage could be cleared by paying £150-200 to Rasheedullah, who was openly finalising deals with PIA passengers in the lounge.
The officials of the Pakistan High Commission in the UK also recommended that the entire staff of the PIA in Birmingham airport should be transferred immediately as they were tarnishing the relations of overseas Pakistan’s with the government of Pakistan.
The sources also claimed Mirs’ tenure as a PIA manager at the Birmingham Airport was to be completed by the end of November but he had already started his efforts to get his tenure extended by three years.
In this regard, an important leader of the PPP from Rawalpindi was pleading his case with the PIA high ups and was trying his best to get Mir’s tenure’s extension approved.
Despite repeated attempts, PIA Public Affairs GM Sultan Hasan and UK Manager Mansoor Mela could not be reached for comments.
Well this is nothing new PIA have been corrupt since they started travelling from the UK. I'm sure this is not just happening at Birmingham airport I'm sure it is happening in Manchester and heathrow also. I suggest that all UK airports need investigating.
