“Disaster, drought, disease and democracy”

The ills mentioned by Hashim Abro in his above titled letter are because of lack of storage capacity on our rivers. 88 percent of the river flows take place in the three flood months and bring about disastrous floods. Only 12 percent flow take place in the remaining nine months and brings about droughts. Also reduced flow in the canals increases pollution and brings about diseases. It is only by increasing storage capacity on our rivers that the floods, droughts and diseases can be minimised. Kalabagh dam can do the needful in five years, Bhasha dam will be too little too late, at best a replacement for Mangla and Tarbela dams which will have lost considerable capacity for storage and generation by the time it is built in 15 years.
