Apropos to news Secretary Defense Lt Gen (retd) Yasin Malik has been appointed as Chairman of PIA, along with Capt Junaid Younas, who was acting as MD PIA, has been confirmed as new MD PIA after Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman resigned due to health reasons. The main task of the new chairman is to bring the national airline out of crisis, reduce the burden of debts, cut in wasteful expenditure and over all work discipline in the air line. Keeping in view the culture in PIA with scores of unions the new chairman shall face same problems as being faced by his predecessor, but known for accepting challenges should be able to steer the floating ship to safety. Apart from technical problems, lack of maintenance, shortage of aircraft, faulty aircraft and surplus manpower shall be the major impediments which he has to tackle.
Unfortunately, there is always a clash of interest between the management and the government as all decisions by the ruling elite have to be implemented. The new chairman has to put his foot down and ensure that there is no interference from any direction in running the affairs of the air line. We have a DMD investment who is underutilised and have not added anything to already existing outfits, do we really require him? Likewise many general managers are underutilized. They must be put on job with specific agenda. Merit coupled with accountability should be the only criteria for promotion and postings abroad.
It would be in the interest of PIA if the chairman spends two-three days in a week in PIA Head Office to monitor the activities of management. His priority should be to immediately arrange more aircraft as our major traffic share is being consumed by foreign and private airlines. People are not happy due to delayed flights, lack of facilities and poor customer services. We hope that new Chairman PIA comes up to the expectations of the people of Pakistan who are keen to see the airline getting in to profit and bring back the good name to the country and recover its lost glory.

The new Chairman and MD should get rid of the rotten corrupt like the unutlized DMD, who was responsible for pilferage, massive corruption and indiscipline. Remember the video showing him dancing like a clown with a whiskey glass balanced on his head.
