National Industrial Relations Commissions (NIRC) Registrar Shaukat Nawaz Goraya ordered the enhancement of the tenure of Pakistan Steel Peoples Workers Union for combined bargaining agent CBA in the Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM).
Pakistan Steel Labour Union and United Workers Front filed an application in NIRC on June 22 and 25 for holding a referendum in the PSM as the CBA had completed its two-year tenure, according to Industrial Relations Ordinance (IRO) 1969. However the sitting CBA Pakistan Steel Peoples Workers Union had filed an application on July 18 for the enhancement in the CBA tenure from two to three years as per IRA 2012 subsection 11 of section 19.
After a detail hearing of the arguments from both sides Islamabad High Court (IHC) granted an extension of one year to CBA. The extension has been granted sighting IRA-2012 subsection 11 of section 19 which says that if any trade union has more than 5000 members in a province then the period of two years would be enhanced to three years.
Chairman PSPWU-CBA Shamshad Qureshi, declared the judgement as a positive sign towards betterment of workers and Pakistan Steel.
