Ahead of Pakistan’s Premier Raja Pervez Ashraf’s visit, China on Tuesday tacitly confirmed reports that it was taking charge of the strategic Gwadar deep water port in Balochistan, which may then be converted into an oil pipeline hub to augment energy supplies from the Gulf.
Talking about Pakistan’s Shipping Minister Babar Khan Ghauri’s remarks that China may take charge of the port operations with USD 10 billion investment, following pullout of Singapore Port Authority (SPA); Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said both countries are engaged in cooperation to build infrastructure projects.
“China and Pakistan are neighbours of traditional friendship. Over the years, China and Pakistan have engaged in wide-ranging cooperation in all fields including infrastructure construction with a view to helping Pakistan improve people’s well-being and promote social and economic development,” Hong said in a written response to a query.
“Such cooperation is also beneficial for regional stability and development,” he said, without directly referring to Babar’s comments.
He also did not say whether the issue would be discussed during Pakistan PM’s visit who is due attend the World Economic Forum 2012, also known as Summer Davos, starting from September 11 at Tianjin city.
The forum would be inaugurated by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, who is expected to hold talks with PM on its sidelines.

  1. A mutually beneficial project. But a word of caution for Pakistan where the traditional culture is over-reliance on others which needs to be revisited.

Pakistan is stronger nation than its neighbour and will come out of the present predicament even stronger but it must invest in the welfare of its people.

You can invest in human resource development and welfare and grow like Germany.

  2. Live long Pak-China friendship. We trust China because this friendly nation has never harmed us. Rather she stood by us through thick and thin. China respects Pakistan's sovereignty and integrity. PSA was not doing enough to further develop Gwadar port. China deserves the contract because China built it and this port today exist only because of China and God.
I hope this can bring prosperity to Balochistan province and ultimately Pakistan.
    Let's hope for the best!

  3. Pakistan needs to have policies in foreign investments that ensure the development of human resources, technical know how, and R&D development locally.

For example countries like China and Iran are good and friendly countries towards Pakistan. For China this a strategic investment, and for Pakistan we need to also make sure our interest is well served. In such investments we need to have a solid policy that are based on the above items I have listed. We need to bring in new technology into the country and develop our human resources and we can learn from China a lot, these two particularly will lay a foundation for a strong and independent Pakistan that will not rely in the future on IMF and world bank.

Our well wishes are always for this country, now it's time we take some action ourselves and make it better. All Pakistanis are eagerly waiting for new elections and a new credible and capable government to bring in a change.

    Pakistan zindabad'.

  4. What our Government now need is to make China hire Baloch people for the work at the port. It will definately improve Baloch people economical conditions. Pakistan should invest more in education sector in Balochistan to make Baloch people more attractive to foreign companies that want to do business in Balochistan.

  5. Allah o Akber, Tamam Muhib e Watan Pakistanion ko Dilli Mubarak ho, Pak China Dosti K-2 Pahar ki tarah mazboot ore atal hy, InshaAllah jald sub theek ho jaye ga. Ameen

  6. Chinese have won Pakistani hearts. This is called cooperation. EU countries have not been taken over by each other. They merely trust and cooperate with each other. This step will be helpful in saving Pakistan from India.
