We are living in 21st century but the unending incidents of human rights violations in our society, especially against women, are cause for extreme concern and depressing signs of the lawlessness time we are live in.
Mariam’s murder in Khanewal district and the torturing of a woman at the hands of another woman who cut off her hair in Gujranwala district, reflect the extent of social degeneration.
This is with the reference of news August 9, 2012 that said: “Two women were allegedly paraded naked around in the Khangarh area Muzaffargarh district here when they took a wedding proposal to the house of a girl.”
My aim is to the draw the attention of the people of our society and especially those people who were seen this bashful incident. During the whole episode the local people played the role of silent spectators and did not dare to intervene as those who were parading the naked women were armed. Some butcher masses (relatives of the girl) filmed the whole incident on a mobile phone.
This is very shameful for us and a question mark on the performance of NGO’s, political leadership and law enforcement agencies (especially police).
In our country, apart from murder, rape and acid throwing, stripping people naked and parading them in the public is the latest disgusting trend. Despite the revulsion of ordinary Pakistanis for such abatement and cruelty and the presence of laws protecting against such criminal behavior, not only do the culprits go scoot free, but also the fact that the culprits are at times the police themselves, is further food for thought. The police have become a part of problem, not the solution.
I appeal to the political leadership, judiciary and law enforcement agencies to take stern against those convicted persons who are allegedly involved in crimes against women. The government must make a harsh example of those guilty of such harassment.
