This is with reference to the Chairman NADRA’s appeal that appeared in sections of press addressing political leaders for their assistance in mobilizing Pakistani citizens to obtain their computerized national identity cards (CNlCs). I think it is the first time ever in the history of Pakistan that such earnest efforts are being made by the authority to ensure maximum participation of the people. Now political parties should also play their role.
It has been the habit of defeated political parties to allege that the elections were engineered and/or many votes were bogus. But will they have the right to make this allegation unless they participate in the process of ensuring that the voter lists are accurate? If more citizens obtain their CNICs, it will be easier to compile correct electoral rolls.
Thus, political parties should play their part in the process. It is time to share this responsibility and every citizen, party or organization should come forward to ensure free and fair election. The good thing is that NADRA has now developed voters’ database for ECP instead of a list which is a significant historic change and will serve the nation in future.
