The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan on Sunday claimed responsibility for the attack on Swat Hotels Association President Haji Zahid Khan, an active member of the Swat Qaumi Jirga.
He was coming home after offering Isha prayers at a nearby mosque near Mingora General Bus Stand when unidentified men opened fire at him, severely injuring him. He was reported to have received bullets in head.
Talking to reporters from an unknown location, spokesman for the TTP Malakand Division, Sirajuddin said the group had carried out the attack on Khan as he always opposed the TTP.
“The TTP intends to carry out similar attacks on members of the Swat Quami Jirga and all those who are anti-Taliban and pro-army,” he said.
In a statement, ISPR Malakand spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Arif Mehmood said the Pakistan Army condemned the terrorist attack.
“The Pakistan Army can never forget the members of the SQJ who raised their voices against the militants during the Taliban era in Swat. The army will never allow anyone to disturb the peace of the area,” he added. Mehmood said security forces and police were conducting search operations to apprehend the culprits.
