Prolonged and unscheduled outages continued to irk the citizens across the country as the power shortfall has again surged to 5,713MW. Long hours of power outages have made the life miserable for the countrymen. Outages have deprived the people of small businesses and trade from earning livelihood for their families. Due to intense hot weather followed by prolonged outages, it has become impossible for people to sleep at night. In big cities, the outage duration has reached 10-15 hours while countryside areas are being provided with electricity for four to six hours per day only. Spokesperson of the energy management cell said that power generation from different sources was 13,000MW against the demand of 18,713MW with as shortfall of 5713MW. He said that hydel power generation was 4,060MW, thermal 1,959MW and IPPs were generating 6,930MW electricity.
