The Chairman Intellectual Property Organization (IPO) Pakistan Hameed Ullah Jan Afridi on Wednesday said the Environment Sound Technologies (ESTs) can reduce hazardous effects of climate change.
The ESTs should be promoted by involvement of scientists, researchers and technologists to encourage their inventions, the Chairman IPO said while addressing delegates attending WIPO Regional Forum on Intellectual Property (IP) and Environmentally Sound Technologies (ESTs) in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The event has been organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in cooperation with National Intellectual Property Office Sri Lanka (NIPOS) and Japan Patent Office (IPO).
Afridi said WIPO has provided an excellent opportunity to the experts of public and private sectors to develop an integrated approach to explore appropriate way-forward to achieve the targeted goals.
Hameed Ullah Jan Afridi said IPO-Pakistan has initiated a program to extend patent registration facilities to the inventors and special focus is being given to draw the attention of researchers to concentrate on developing utility models and patents of ESTs. He said Pakistan has tremendous potential of wind and solar energy projects and we can meet our energy requirements by introducing new ESTs which would also help reduce environmental pollution.
Earlier, a delegate from Pakistan, Musa Khan who is an expert on Climate Change and Director Coactive delivered a presentation about the current situation of Pakistan with reference to climate change and highlighted the need of ESTs.
He said that developing countries are most vulnerable to climate change impacts because they have meager resources to adapt latest technologies; they need international assistance to support national planning for sustainable development.
He said that Pakistan has recently suffered some of the worst floods seen in history and devastating floods affected 20 million people. This in particular highlights the vulnerability of much of Asia to climate change, he added.
He stressed for collaborated efforts to tackle the challenges of climate change in the region.
