The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday adjourned hearing of Asghar Khan Case regarding misuse of public money for political purposes till 4th June.
Hearing the case‚ a three-member bench of the apex court‚ headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry‚ summoned Governor State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) for assistance.
According to a private TV channel, the SC directed the authorities to produce a notification pertaining to the foundation of a political wing of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) during Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s government.
During the hearing, Asghar Khan’s counsel Salman Akram Raja told the court that the government had not provided him with the commission’s report on Habib Bank.
Raja said he had also contacted Interior Minister Rehman Malik in this regard but was not provided with the requisite report.
Chief Justice Iftikhar said that despite being directed several times, the government had failed to provide reports of the two commissions on the Habib Bank and the now defunct Mehran Bank.
Later into the hearing, Secretary Law Yasmin Abbasi submitted the interim Habib Bank inquiry report before the court.
WHY SC has not decided this case even after 16 years?
It is good that Supreme Court has finally taken up this case while Asghar Khan though aging is still alive and well.
The case is fairly simple. At General Aslam Beg's instructions, Mr. Yunus Habib provided the General Rs. 14 crore of bank's money. The General knew full well that what he had ordered was nothing short of stealing public money. The General passed on some of the illegally obtained money to ISI and the rest is unaccounted for.
I hope the SC sends the General (and his accomlices and recipients) to jail, sell all his assets and refund the money to the treasury as HBL was state owned at the time. Because of this and similar actions, the Government had to fund HBL to the tune of Rs. 270 crore from the treasury.
