Peace in the region

There are speculations and doubts being raised by analysts regarding the post withdrawal scenario of US forces from Afghanistan. Based on the historical facts and present ground realities, all of them are presenting a very gloomy picture of Afghanistan.

The view particularly projected is that there have been conflicts and clashes between the tribes and warlords. There are possibilities that the same situation may emerge again and the country faces a civil war. If such a development takes place Pakistan is going to suffer the most. As it has happened in the past that Pakistan had to face enormous problems due to influx of refugees, there is an element of concern regarding the future.

The second issue raised is of a weak government in Afghanistan not capable to look after the affairs of the state after the pull out of foreign forces. The question is for how long foreign forces are going to handle the internal and external matters of governance. After all the rulers have to learn to rule and exist in this world. The third issue is that Afghan army and other security forces are not trained enough to look after internal security issues or defend their country in case of any problem.

Whatever the scenario may emerge, Pakistan should focus on having a cordial relationship with Afghan people based on mutual trust and respect. As having religious and cultural strong bondage, we can understand the ground realities, problems and feelings of each other much more than anyone else. Pakistan certainly is in a better position to train or facilitate establishment of the Afghan security forces and maintain peace in the region. Other neighbours can also come forward and constitute a Peace Force to look after the security issues. A desire to have peace and prosperity in the region can only materialise when there is a strong will to do so.
