A few nights ago, power went off and came back in just a few seconds, and this happened twice. This is most damaging for electrical equipment. The running pressure in a compressor of an air conditioner or a freezer is 300 pounds per square inch. It takes three minutes for this pressure to equalise when the compressor is shut down. If the compressor is restarted while the pressure is still high and has not had time to equalise, the compressor motor will get overloaded and could burn out. Power should be switched on only three minutes after it has tripped, never in a few seconds.
