Judges’ tenure

The latest judgement of the Supreme Court of Pakistan regarding rental power units is a landmark decision unmasking the shady dealings of our high and mighty rulers.

The judgements of our superior courts are the shining beacon of light in the darkness of corruption all around us. This leads to the question of age of retirement of judges of High Courts and Supreme Court that stands at 62 and 65 years respectively at present. It would be in the fitness of things to raise the age of judges of Superior Courts to 65 in the case of High Courts and 70 years in the case of Supreme Court judges.

The politicians must consider to extend the tenures of judges of Superior Courts by a constitutional amendment even if it is not to their liking. This is because we would never get a chance of ushering in a fully independent judiciary like the existing one.

The Chief Justice of Supreme Court is a living example of defying an army general who held absolute power. The majesty of law can only be ensured if we extend the tenures of our superior court judges to make them fully independent of the vagaries of despotic rule.
