A massive ransom of Rs 1 billion was paid to kidnappers for the release of two Swiss tourists who were found in Pakistan’s tribal region.
They were kidnapped last year and spent eight months in captivity, before apparently escaping the Taliban and walking to an army checkpoint in North Waziristan, one of the most dangerous places on the planet. The Swiss government says it never pays ransoms. Almost two weeks after their release, few details have emerged on how Olivier David Och and Daniela Widmer made their daring escape. And how they managed hours in a militant stronghold before stumbling across an army checkpoint. According to Daily Telegraph, experts on Pakistan’s tribal regions said a massive ransom was paid for the couple – one billion rupees or almost £7m.
