The Jharoka Art Gallery (JAG) opened its doors on Monday for an exquisite contemporary art display by Islamabad-based Russian Chernitsova Nadejda.
Born in Russia, Chernitsova Nadejda completed her studies at an art school with a gold medal.
In 1993 she started studying architecture at the Saratov State Technical University in Russia and successfully completed her Masters in Architecture in 1999.
She has worked extensively on various architectural projects in Russia and Pakistan.
Nadejda’s current exhibition is characterised by water colours and oil paintings but she loves to work with silk and knows all the three types of Batik.
Her specialities are drawing on silk, watercolour imitation on clothes, while Nadejda’s favourite themes are African, the East, flowers and architecture.
According to her, Batik can be used in different ways in interior design components such as lamps, doors and screens.
Talking to Pakistan Today, about the various techniques she uses for Batik, Nadejda said: “The fabric is not a canvas and not a paper. The material dictates the features. Besides, very often the invoice of a fabric, the structure of a fiber and its interlacing play a very important role in how the result of your work will look.”
The artist is displaying 28 pieces in the exhibition, which will continue at the Jharoka Art Gallery till April 3.
