The murderer, who killed a 65-year old man, Arshad Chughtai, and his three-year old granddaughter Khatija Adnan, residents of 163/Abu Bakar Block, Garden Town, and injured their maid Shumaila Jaffer (14), actually wanted to kidnap the girl for ransom. This was revealed by Deputy Inspector General of Lahore Police’s Operations Wing Ghulam Mehmood Dogar while talking to the media. Shumaila was shifted to the hospital where doctors treated her and she recovered from her injuries.
Police officials investigated Shumaila, who revealed that her elder brother Akif Jaffer had killed Arshad and Khatija. The DIG said that Shumaila had further revealed that her brother had injured her when she stopped him from carrying out the heinous act. He said that after knowing about Akif’s involvement the police traced his location and arrested him from Islamabad. He further added that Akif not only went on to confess his crime but also revealed his intentions. The DIG confirmed that the murderer wanted to receive ransom and had initially tried to kidnap the girl.
Akif, in police custody, told media that he was in love with his cousin and wanted to marry her, and added that his aunt demanded Rs100,000 in return for marrying her daughter with Akif. He said that being a labourer he had failed in mustering such a huge sum of money and hence, had conjured up the kidnapping plan. He said that he had found a large sharp sickle from a park and took it to the place of incident with half his face covered. He said that Khatija had showed resistance and started screaming when he tried to take her away. His sister Shumaila had also offered resistance which had infuriated him and led to him slaughtering the minor girl and injuring his sister.
“Due to Shumaila’s resistance and a brief scuffle with Arshad Chughtai, the mask which I was wearing slipped down exposing my identity”, the killer said adding that Arshad Chugatai had identified him and had threatened him with dire consequences after which he had slaughtered Arshad as well and had escaped. The DIG has announced cash prizes and commendatory certificate for the police team.
