The historical Jahangir Park in Saddar is now in ruins and teeming with anti-social elements due to the negligence of the Parks and Horticulture Department of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), National Forum for Environment and Health (NFEH) President Naeem Qureshi said in a statement issued on Sunday.
“The park is in a pathetic state and public transport vehicle drivers have now started parking coaches and mini-buses there as well,” he added.
“The reluctance of the KMC, the DMC South and the Parks and Horticulture Department is responsible for this state of the park.”
Qureshi said the park was once a place of recreational activities, but now people are afraid to go there.
He observed that the trees in the park have dried up and there is no grass as well. It looks like a garbage dumping site due to the lack of proper care and maintenance. The iron fence around the park is also broken at many places.
The reading room inside the park is also in a bad shape. The furniture there is broken and can no longer be used.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Sindh chief secretary had instructed the forest secretary and the Karachi district coordination officer in May 2009 to immediately renovate the park and remove the encroachments there. However, the park is still in a shabby state.
This is very sade we should protect our heritage all the authorities must take appropriate action.
