Two people were killed in separate incidents in the city on Saturday. Unidentified assailants opened fire on the security guard of Bisma Garden, an apartment building in Gulistan-e-Jauhar.
The 28-year-old guard was identified as Sardar Mohammad, who had arrived in the city from Dir in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa a week ago.
Separately, a 25-year-old man identified as Shireen Gul was shot dead by unidentified culprits in Ittehad Town. According to the police, Gul hailed from Kohat, where he had murdered a relative and escaped to Karachi.
The Crime Investigation Department arrested five alleged extortionists at the Hub River Road on Saturday.
They also recovered more than two dozen hand grenades, a rifle, a pistol and 5,000 bullets from the arrested men.
The residents of Lyari took to the street against the law enforcement agencies on Saturday to protest the latter’s inability to curb grenade attacks in their area.
Hundreds of protesters gathered to march towards Bilawal House led by Pakistan People’s Party leader Zafar Baloch. However, they were intercepted by the police near Football House.
Deputy Commissioner South Mustafa Jamal Kazi reached there and convinced them to return.
Baloch told the police official that some people are trying to create a law and order situation in Lyari. The deputy commissioner assured the protesters that he would involve himself in the matter to address the problem of Lyari residents.
