How to end corruption?

Pakistan ranks 42nd amongst the most corrupt nations in the world (Transparency International, 2011). Corruption is at its peak in the country. Its roots are widespread in courts, politics, and bureaucracy.

Corruption, bribery, dishonesty and devaluation of merit are different aspects of the same evil. Corruption plays a pivotal role in the destruction of our nation. It has been the cause of uncertainty in the country, individuation in the society, dissatisfaction amongst the masses, distraction from ethics, and deterioration of law and order.

Where there is no justice, corruption finds its way. The second main reason of corruption is the competition amongst people in meeting high standards of life. The third main reason is poor performance on the part of institutions and lack of effective accountability.

It is necessary to bring justice in the society in order to eliminate corruption. It is also justice to bring balance between an individual’s duties and his income. This is the reason why the police in general is known to take bribes while Motorway Police is away from this evil to much extent. Having no justice does not imply to take bribes. A sensitive and honest man should keep his clothes clean.

Policymakers should bring balance between duties and income of every individual, and formulate clear policies based on justice. Furthermore, the government is required to ensure the rule of law which includes not only equal application of law but also equal protection by law. Similarly, courts are demanded to provide cheap and efficient justice.

Moreover, those who occupy responsible chairs should make their account open to public and should be ready for accountability at any instant. Last but not the least, the active role of media to eradicate corruption is emphasised as it not only keeps a vigilant eye on the institutions but also makes people aware by disseminating information.

The pervasive corruption could be curbed in this way. Intense punishments do not check corruption; instead, they increase it.

  1. According to transparency international's Pakistan Chapter's head, corruption amounts to 8500 billion rupees in the current prime minister's tenure, if pakistan can effectively nip this evil then they don't need even a dime from the outside world.

  2. Then vote somebody who advocates anti-corruption policies and not others who are popular for nothing but deception and corruption.

  3. i think our society has accepted corruption as a norm. The news in print and electronic media, of 17 cars of Lahore police used by high ups, retired as well as serving has gone un-noticed, by the people at large, as well as those who are at the helm of affairs. The cost of fuel consumed by these vehicles in a year runs over 20 millions. No returning of the cars, no follow up, no editorial, why, because we take it for granted. Shame.

  4. good article. You said "Intense punishments do not check corruption; instead, they increase it."…how do you prove it?

  5. You are telling us what most of people already know. Please come up with some solid solution rather than just stating why people do corruption and who should take care of it. Every one knows that its Governments duty to keep a check on it but the question is how?
