In Karachi, the functioning of traffic signals is very irregular. Even during the rush hours of the day, the traffic lights of many of the city’s major roads are often not working, either due to power failure or because they are out of order. At night too, traffic signals discontinue to operate after 11PM. Moreover, on many occasions, there is no traffic police or city traffic wardens who can take charge of the situation and control the traffic.
This leads to some unpleasant scenarios, traffic jams and accidents. Naturally, when there would be no red lights to stop the coming traffic, then no one would be bound to halt and wait for their turn and everyone would want to cross the road first. When this happens, motorists from all sides of an intersection move simultaneously in order to cross the road, but ultimately get stuck up. In a hasty attempt to be the first ones to pass through the junction, they become the cause of disturbance and inconvenience for others as well as for themselves.
Accidents are also mostly caused in the absence of a proper traffic regulatory system. When signals are not working, motorists from all sides of a road come at the same time towards the crossing, and there is a big chance of them to collide with one another and cause a crash. And these accidents caused by violating traffic rules or due to out of order traffic lights can even be fatal.
Traffic signals are installed on every road and intersection to facilitate the smooth flow of vehicles and prevent traffic jams; but to accomplish this purpose they must also work properly throughout day and night. And especially in a metropolis like Karachi, where there are vehicles on the road twenty four hours a day, discontinuing the function of traffic signals can just not be afforded.
