Preachers of hate are hatching a conspiracy to ignite a Shia-Sunni sectarian strife in Karachi and Muslims should not fall for their trap, Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain said on Monday. “The killing of innocent people on the basis of sectarian differences is barbaric and the culprits responsible for these crimes do not deserve any leniency,” he said while addressing a gathering of clerics belonging to different schools of thought at the Lal Qila Ground in Azizabad, held in connection with the month of Rabiul Awwal.
MQM Rabita Committee Deputy Convener Anis Ahmed Qaimkhani, other members of the committee and office-bearers of different wings of the party were also present on the occasion. “The government must provide adequate security to people and bring the killers to justice,” the MQM chief demanded. “The MQM has been making practical efforts for promoting religious harmony and unity among Muslims. Islam is a religion of peace and security, but certain callous and hard-hearted people are propagating hatred from the pulpit of mosques, he added.
“This is being done to undermine the environment of peace and unity for which the MQM has worked so hard for.” Hussain said whether a murdered person belongs to a Shia or a Sunni family, the grief of the mourning families is alike. The MQM chief condemned the murder of doctors, lawyers and clerics of different schools of thought and said this is being done to create Shia-Sunni tensions in the city. He said Dr Jaffer Mohsin, who was killed recently, was the trustee of an Imambargah and his murder should be condemned by both Shia and Sunni clerics.
Hussain asked clerics to educate the younger generation about the life of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and the traits of his noble character in simple language. “The message of peace, love and brotherhood should be preached during the holy month of Rabiul Awwal,” he added. The clerics present on the occasion included Maulana Tanvirul Haque Thanvi, Allama Akram Hussain Tirmizi, Allama Azhar Hussain Naqvi, Allama Ameer Abdullah Farooqi, Maulana Murtaza Rehman, Allama Abbas Kumaili, Maulana Hafiz Qadir, Maulana Saeed Qamar Qasmi, Allama Waqar Hassan Taqvi, Maulana Faisal Aziz and Mufti Abdul Aleem Qadri.
