The judicial system left by the British serves the interests of the state, not the people, Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice (CJ) Azmat Saeed said on Friday. Addressing the inaugural session of golden jubilee ceremony of chartered accountants at PC hotel, Saeed said, “Our present day judicial system was transplanted in South Asia from across the seas by the British and while it was efficient in dispute resolution between natives, it did not offer protection to citizens against the legislative and executive powers of the state.”
Saeed said, “It was designed for subjects, not citizens.” He said it was unfortunate that judicial mindsets did not change after independence and decision after decision were handed out to validate illegitimate actions at the expense of the people of Pakistan. He said the judiciary failed to protect the rights of the people repeatedly over the next six decades. He said the time has come for the judicial system to be made pro-people.
