Reacting to the Supreme Court’s verdict on the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) case, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Sindh said the ordinance was a political agreement that helped restore democracy in the country, but some beneficiaries are now trying to evade the next general elections by bringing the pact to an end.
“Some beneficiaries of the NRO are trying to sabotage this agreement,” PPP Sindh Secretary General Taj Haider told Pakistan Today.
“These political beneficiaries have tried several times to have the Swiss cases reopened and are also trying to sabotage the next general elections,” he added.
“They have always tried to create the impression that the president is the only beneficiary of the NRO. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif and the Punjab chief minister also came to the country after a political agreement. Why has the PML-N president not issued a contempt notice for pressuring courts?”
Haider said Swiss Attorney General Daniel Zappeli has already clarified that the Swiss courts cannot reopen cases against President Zardari as he enjoys immunity as per the Pakistan’s constitution.
“It is not only the Pakistani law, but the international law also provides immunity to President Zardari like it does to the presidents of France and Sudan,” he added.
A National Accountability Court (NAB) acquitted the only arrested man in the Cotecna reference case and it has decided that the court could not initiate action as President Zardari, also accused in the case, as he enjoy immunity under the constitution, Haider pointed out.
“The PPP Sindh would review options to call a general body meeting after its core committee meeting in Islamabad,” he added.
PPP acting Information Secretary Waqar Mehdi claimed that all cases against President Zardari have been proven to be fabricated.
“If we can face jails, then we can also face courts during our rule,” he said. Saifur Rehman, the former NAB chief, sought forgiveness from President Zardari for hatching a conspiracy against him on the directives of anti-PPP forces,” he added.
“We are monitoring the situation closely and would decide the future strategy after the PPP core committee meeting in Islamabad.”
