Chief of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Fazlur Rehman on Thursday alleged there were 35 million bogus voters in electoral lists and the anomaly had to be rectified. Addressing a press conference following his party’s provincial council meeting, he proposed urgency for an “independent election commission” in the country. To a question, Fazl appreciated that NADRA was playing its role to weed out fake voters. The JUI-F chief said there was a need for consensus among all political parties about any snap elections in the country and that democracy must not be allowed to be derailed under any pretext.
“I do not think there is anything wrong in holding early election and I do foresee polls in 2012,” he said. Early polls, he reiterated, must not be due to disagreement among different institutions of the country nor should it lead to dispute among them. “We are passing through a crucial phase and cannot allow the derailment of democracy,” he insisted. The JUI-F chief said mistakes were also committed by Nawaz Sharif and no one was perfect. He said the PML-N, as well as the JUI-F had participated in the polls conducted by the government of Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf. Fazl said he was eager for the restoration of the MMA.
