The concluding ceremony of a four-day media workshop, organised by the Unified Media Club (UMC), was held at the Punjab University’s Institute of Communication Studies (ICS) on Friday.
Addressing the ceremony, Punjab government Spokesperson Senator Pervez Rashid said that the culture of debate was discouraged in the educational institutions during the dictatorship in Zia-ul-Haq’s time. He said academic development was arrested and extremism was furthered in the society, adding that journalists and politicians should promote tolerance towards each other’s views.
Dean of Social Sciences Prof Dr Muhammad Hafeez said that each person would have to play a role in the development of the society, adding that the government should patronise research and think tanks and provide them with sufficient funds. The government should involve researchers from universities in the policy-making, he said.
Speaking on the occasion, UMC President Muhammad Hassan said that UMC provided a platform to the students of media sciences to provide them with training opportunities to perform their professional responsibilities.
The four-day media workshop included training in reporting, production and the news room culture. It was attended by the students of Punjab University ICS, Lahore College for Women University, Kinnaird College, University of Management and Technology (UMT), Forman Christian College (FCC) University and other journalists.
