Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly (PA) Raja Riaz said on Monday that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) unanimously agreed to present a resolution for the formation of a new province in Punjab. Speaking to media outside the Assembly Hall after the parliamentary meeting of PPP Punjab, Riaz said the party had given approval to declare South Punjab a separate province and would submit the resolution on Tuesday. He said the PPP and Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) had already submitted their resolutions to the PA Secretariat but the issue was not yet part of the session’s agenda and the PPP will try to convince treasury bench representatives to add it to the agenda.
He said even the meager funds allocated for South Punjab were being diverted to Lahore. PPP Parliamentary Leader Zulfiqar Gondal said that they will also discuss the issue of local government system in Punjab during the session. While PML-Q Parliamentary Leader Chaudhry Zahiruddin said the the PA Secretariat had confirmed the resolution in favour of a new province in Punjab had been sent to the law department.
