‘Seeking foreign help objectionable, not treason’

Former US ambassador Husain Haqqani on Friday said he believed that if a Pakistani citizen asked another country to intervene in national affairs, it was not an act of treason, though the move would be certainly objectionable.
Asked in an interview with Geo News whether he thought the contents of the memo were a violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty, Haqqani said, “If an American citizen sends a memo through another American citizen to yet another third American, then it’s not treason according to the American law. But if a Pakistani citizen asks another country to intervene in their national matters, it is certainly objectionable, though not an act of treason.”
The former ambassador to Washington said he was innocent because no one had proven him guilty and he was sure of emerging clean-handed if any trial was conducted against him.
Haqqani said he would present all facts before the parliamentary committee that is investigating the “memo” issue. Asked why did he resign if he was sure of his chastity, he said he took the desperate decision because his credibility as ambassador was challenged.

  1. Dear Mr Haqqani

If this request is made by the ambassador of that country it is an official request and can potentially have devastating consequences for that country (in this case Pakistan) and its people. Many such conversations, informal and sometimes formal request have caused significant loss of life in Pakistan.
You were ambassador of Pakistan to US and not a common man on the street. This action of yours came to public attention besides the one you did contributing towards certain paragraphs in Kerry Lugar Bill.
You have most certainly done an act with potentially devastating consequences. We are not aware of what you have done in the past but can see glimpses of the results of such requests and decisions in todays’ Pakistan. To an average person in Pakistan it is an act of treason which either you did singlehandedly or did on some one’s behest.
I would like to add, if that someone is the President of Pakistan it is even more serious.
A criminal mind continues to engage in criminal activity and is eventually indicted and prosecuted for one crime. The conviction is secured through the judicial process and the punishment served. In some countries it is only imprisonment and in others a capital punishment is also awarded. A recent example is Pakistan cricket players who had been engaging in indictable activities for some time but eventually caught and now serving time.
I am neither a judge nor am I a prosecutor or but have advised British Courts on human criminal behaviour for many years. I am, therefore, extremely concerned about your actions and the one or those instigating you.

    Kind regards
    Yours Sincerely
