1975 massacre: India to hunt down two suspects

Indian Home Secretary RK Singh has asked Bangladesh for information to help hunt down two suspects in the 1975 massacre of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the independence leader, and 16 of his relatives and aides during a military coup.
Last year, Bangladesh executed five former army officers for assassinating Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, but several suspects convicted in absentia are still at large. Two are rumored to be in India. The Indian secretary assured visiting Bangladesh Home Secretary Monzur Hossain that India pledges all possible cooperation in catching the suspects.
The Indian Home Ministry said that India has asked for details about the men’s appearance and contacts that might help locate them. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was first president of Bangladesh after independence from Pakistan in 1971. Both Singh and Hossain agreed to operational the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty, Agreement on Transfer of Sentenced Persons and Agreement on Combating Organised Crime and Illegal Drug Trafficking, which had been signed in 2010.
They also agreed to implement Coordinated Border Management Plan, which had been inked in last July. The two home secretaries reviewed the sharing of intelligence between the two countries and reaffirmed their resolve to take immediate action on the basis of real time and actionable information through nodal points of the two countries. Both sides agreed to develop mechanisms to further hasten the process of verification of nationality status of prisoners lodged in jails of either country, particularly of those who have completed their sentence, to enable their early repatriation.
