‘Nusrat Bhutto played pivotal role for democracy’

Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nazir Ahmed Sangi, faculty members, administrative staff and employees and students of the Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) on Wednesday paid rich tribute to Mother of Democracy Begum Nusrat Bhutto.
The vice-chancellor at the condolence reference made the announcement of renaming the main hall of the varsity as Nusrat Bhutto Auditorium. At the start of the function, the audience observed a one-minute silence. Dr Sangi expressed his deep sorrow over the sad demise of the brave lady, saying Nusrat Bhutto rendered unmatchable sacrifices for the restoration of democracy promoting the philosophy of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, adding that her struggle democracy would be remembered forever.
He said seminars and lectures on ‘Human Rights and Democracy’ would soon be arranged at the Nusrat Bhutto Auditorium. Sangi said the great leader believed in democracy and made strenuous efforts for promoting democracy at the grassroots level and strengthening democratic institutions. She was committed to resolve all issues politically because she did not believe in the politics of confrontation, he added.
Faculty of Education Dean Prof Dr Rehana Masroor said it was Begum Bhutto who struggled for women rights and brought them into the mainstream politics of the country besides establishing a women wing in the Pakistan People’s Party. Qasim Haider, the director of Institute of Educational Technology/Public Relations, said Nusrat Bhutto played a pivotal role in the fight for restoration of democracy. He said Begum Bhutto was a very courageous woman who witnessed the martyrdom of her husband, a daughter and two sons, but she never stepped back from her principled stand against dictatorship. Earlier, a Quran Khawani was held for the departed soul of late Begum Bhutto.
