BISE to convene and discuss issues following strikes

A special meeting has been called by Punjab Additional Chief Secretary Nadeem Hassan Asif, today (Friday) to solve student’s issues regarding the intermediate result fiasco by Punjab’s eight Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE). A committee has also been formed, comprising newly-appointed Higher Education Secretary Ijaz Munir, Literacy Secretary and Lahore BISE Chairman with additional charge Dr Allah Baksh, Additional Secretary Nadeem Hassan Asif and IT Secretary.
Munir, while taking to Pakistan Today, said all issues would be discussed in today’s meeting. A number of changes have been witnessed in the Lahore Board and Higher Education Department, following the series of debacles by the examination boards. Munir, a grade-20 DMG officer is posted as Higher Education Department vice secretary, Haseeb Athar has been posted as the secretary of the newly-created Sports, Tourism, Youth Affairs and Archeology Department. Munir assumed his charge on Thursday. Earlier the Punjab CM also suspended the former BISE Lahore chairman Akram Kashmiri and examinations controller Ejaz Naqvi.
On the other hand, candidates’ protest against the board administration turned violent at Gujranwala, where a large number of students forcibly entered and damaged the board’s records and buildings. A similar protest was reported in Gujrat, where students blocked GT Road. Students said the result posted on the internet was erroneous and they would continue their protest until their problems were solved. Students hoped for betterment after the reshuffling of the education department, and asked the government to alleviate the students’ miseries on an emergency basis.
