In order to celebrate the World Teachers’ Day, the ActionAid Pakistan in collaboration with other organisations is launching a book and holding a seminar on ‘What are we teaching our children?’ today (Wednesday).
The event will start at 10:30 am at the Islamabad Hotel and continue till 2:00 pm. “This event brings together government and private educational institutes, teachers’ associations, civil society organisations, academia and right holders to discuss the issues in our text books, their consequences and role of teachers in shaping the personalities of our children. The forum will also provide an avenue to discuss the policy bottlenecks in education sector as well as possible way forwards in the face of post 18th constitutional amendment,” said a press release. Besides others, SDPI Senior Adviser Ahmad Salim, JAAG President Aamir Riaz, Private Schools Network (PSN) President Dr Afzal Babar and Sameena Imtiaz, the executive director of PEAD Foundation, will speak on the occasion. Meanwhile, Ghazali Education Trust on Tuesday announced to hold countrywide walks and functions to mark the teachers’ day. It includes a walk, organised in collaboration with UNESCO, in the federal capital. At a press conference, Ghazali Education Trust Chairman Amir Mahmood called for a sizeable increase in the hiring of primary teachers as their shortage at the government schools was one of factors behind the current state of affairs in education sector. To achieve the slogan of ‘Education for All’ under action plan 2015, there was a shortage of 118,000 primary school teachers in the country but the government was inattentive to the issue, he added.
