Beneficiaries of RPPs

The state coffers may have dried up paying billions of rupees to those who have managed to install depleted and old rental power projects that have never yielded more than 10 percent of their declared capacity and in some cases not even one MW, but the likes of Anwar Majeed and W Z Ahmed have become billionaires in dollar terms.

They and their children have bought several million dollars worth villas in Dubai, Malaysia, UK and Canada, while millions have been rendered unemployed and thousands committed suicide in Pakistan.

More than 60 percent of the industry has been shut down because of this electricity shortage, with no relief in sight. The expensive BMWs and SUVs that owners of rental power projects drive, speaks volumes of the abundance of profits they have reaped.

The unfortunate people of Pakistan may suffer miseries, an epidemic of dengue, or floods, but that does not bother those in power, or those who sit in parliament and the corrupt civil bureaucracy of this country, the ministry of finance or even the Prime Minister of this country. NAB has been made toothless by design and so is the office of Auditor General of Pakistan.
