Another 11 people, including a member of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s security squad, died in Lahore from dengue fever on Saturday, raising the toll to 89 deaths, as the number of cases of the deadly virus in Punjab rose to 9,781. Another 379 people tested positive for dengue in the province on Saturday, 314 in Lahore alone, as the Punjab government’s dengue eradication campaign released Rs 20 million to each teaching hospital for special treatment of dengue patients.
Meanwhile, after the confirmation of dengue cases in Multan and other parts of southern Punjab by the Health Department, authorities have launched special anti-mosquito spray drives in these areas. Reportedly, 152 dengue patients have been brought to Nishtar Hospital in Multan. The Health Services Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has also reported that five patients have died of dengue in the province, while 129 cases have been confirmed out of 268 suspected cases.
WHO TEAM: Meanwhile, a team from the World Health Organisation (WHO) will be arriving in Pakistan on Sunday (today) to help curb the dengue epidemic and provide assistance to Pakistani authorities.
