In recent years, incidences of suicide appear to have increased in Pakistan and suicide has become a major public health problem. Suicide is a condemned act in Islam.
Traditionally, suicide numbers were low but in recent years, they have shown an increase in Pakistan. According to surveys, suicide rate has become more common in youth than in adults. Suicide rates among youth are increasing due to unemployment, pressure of work and studies, depression, anxiety and increasing poverty. The government should take it seriously to reduce the incidence of suicide in young people. School-based interventions, such as recommended by WHO’s Suicide Prevention Strategies should be initiated.
