When government leaders use their power for their own gain, the whole country suffers. It is time to safeguard our democracy before we lose it. Good leaders inspire entire generations to seek a greater good. They cast visions that help nations overcome tyranny and inequality. Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr are examples of this kind of leadership. We do not have to look far to find examples of bad leadership.
It is time for our own government officials to become accountable to those they serve. We must not tolerate those who are callous and indifferent to human suffering and exploit the poor. The self-interest of the wealthy elite at the expense of the poor is a violation of human dignity. We stand against a government that no longer serves its constituents.
When we pursue an illusion of peace and goodwill among the peoples of the world with dollar signs attached, the peace we will be making, according to Archibald MacLeish, will be a peace of oil, a peace of gold, a peace of shipping, a peace, without moral purpose or human interest. It is time to hold our government accountable before we lose even more of the freedoms and opportunities.
