The Sindh Home Department held a meeting on Sunday to review the equipment needed to strengthen police under the Rs 5 billion package announced by President Asif Ali Zardari. The participants of the meeting identified vehicles, weapons and updated close circuit camera system among the police force’s most urgent and essential requirements.
The meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah and attended by President’s Secretary General Salman Farooqui, Home Minister Manzoor Wasan, Finance Minister Murad Ali Shah, Sindh Inspector General of Police Wajid Ali Durrani, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Wasim Ahmed, Finance Secretary Naveed Kamran Baloch and Special Secretary to the Chief Minister Atta Mohammad Panhwar.
This colossal amount, if does not end up in pockets of corrupt ones, can go a long way to revamp the police in Sindh. What the police needs is a helicopter borne force in possession of night goggles and the arms which could match the terrorists' sophisticated weapons. The government could get the services of the military to train the police to be able to take on the thugs. If the need be the services of British Metroppolitan police can be sought to train the police officers.
The command and control system which is being misused by MQM terrorists should be handed to the police for monitoring the movements of suspicious elements.
