The Pakistan Rangers-Sindh along with the Karachi police conducted search operations in different areas of the metropolitan on Friday and arrested dozens of suspects.
On the other hand, despite taking strict security measures to maintain law and order in the city, six more people were killed during the religious occasion of Eidul Fitr.
According to details, the Rangers and police conducted a joint search operation in the residential areas of Gulistan-e-Jauhar and arrested over 15 suspects.
“Several suspects have been arrested in the operation and they will be released only if they are found to be not guilty,” said a Rangers official present on the scene.
Separately, a heavy contingent of the Rangers cordoned off the area of Mosamiat Chowrangi on the University Road to conduct a search operation and arrested several people from a residential complex.
The residents of the complex told Pakistan Today that the Rangers raided different residential complexes and arrested over a dozen people.
Majority of the residents were asleep when the Rangers conducted their search operations in the wee hours.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Rangers have started conducting search operations in the wee hours because they had faced intense resistance during their operation in Lyari.
The Rangers also raided gambling dens across the metropolitan, resulting in arresting over 30 suspects and recovering weapons from the possession of some of the detainees.
The areas where the gambling dens were raided included Chanesar Goth and Jamshed Town, and around 58 people were arrested as a result.
Security officials were of the view that raiding gambling dens is a necessary step for eliminating crime from the city as different criminal groups are being formed at these illegal gambling centres.
KILLED: Strict security measures were taken across the city during Eidul Fitr as thousands of personnel of the Rangers, Frontier Constabulary and city police were present on the roads to avert any untoward incident.
However, despite that, at least six people, including a Pakistan Navy officer, were killed in different incidents of firing.
According to details, unidentified armed assailants gunned down a man on the Mauripur Road in Keamari. The identity of the victim has not been ascertained yet.
Similarly, unidentified armed men on a motorcycle gunned down two people, including a Navy officer, in North Karachi. Police sources said that the incident is apparently one of targeted killing.
Lt Cdr Nasir Nafees was on his way home after offering zuhr prayers when the assailants opened fire on him.
As a result, one Anwar Iqbal died on the spot, whereas Nafees was shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) in a critical condition. However, Nafees succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
So far it is unclear whether Nafees or Iqbal were the original target of the criminals. Police officials said that they are investigating the incident.
Separately, a man was killed in Lyari on the second day of Eid when an unidentified assailant gunned the victim down while he was standing in front of his house. His body was shifted to the CHK.
Moreover, a woman’s body was recovered from Sohrab Goth on Thursday and shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, whereas a man’s body was recovered from Surjani Town.
