Our heritage is an invaluable part of our culture and historical sites are not only indicators of a glorious past but tourist attractions. How these places are treated is indicative of how a nation treats and cherishes (or doesn’t) its past. Not only do we mess with and manipulate history and textbooks of history, we also mess up historical sites all over the country.
I am a resident of Lahore and this city in particular has many historical sites which were once glorious and beautiful but now they are a picture of neglect and depredation. Most historical sites like the old gates, Chuburji, the Lahore Fort, Jehangir’s Tomb, the Shalamar gardens are in a very bad state. Leave alone any restoration work, these sites are not even maintained in the current state that they are which is why they deteriorate with the minute. The admin doesn’t take care but neither do the public as littering and gluing posters are also mottling the beauty of these places.
I would urge the administration to restore and maintain these sites as they are our heritage and we shouldn’t destroy them with our hands.
