Sugar was sold at Rs 78-80 per kilogramme (kg) in the retail markets of the city on Tuesday and the price seems to be rising constantly since the past week.
Owing to the lifting of subsidy by the Punjab government and the Utility Stores Corporation (USC), the price of sugar is rising at an alarming pace and the market sources said that open markets were facing a higher demand for sugar. They said that the price of sugar was increasing despite enough supply.
The price of sugar was Rs 70-72 per kg at the start of Ramadan but by the end of Ramadan, the price increased. Shopkeepers said that the district government took action against the rise of the price of chicken but was silent over the sugar prices, which were rising at an unbelievably swift rate.
A shopkeeper, Ahmed Hasan, said that the price of sugar was rising at an unbelievable rate and that the same sugar stock which was sold for Rs 74 on Tuesday morning was sold at Rs 76 in the evening and that even though people were buying sugar from Ramadan Bazaars right now where there was a subsidy on the sale of sugar, it would be a problem for them after Eidul Fitr when the Ramadan Bazaars would close down. It was necessary for the government to keep a check on the appalling inflation otherwise the price of sugar would rise further after Ramadan, he added. The sugar consumption is estimated at 300,000 metric tonnes per month but the consumption was around 400,000 metric tonnes in Ramadan.
