At least three paramilitary soldiers were killed and more than 20 others injured when militants fired five rockets at the Scouts Camp in Miranshah, headquarters of North Waziristan Agency, on Sunday morning. A similar attack at the Scouts Fort in Razmak took place at the same time but no casualties were reported.
The paramilitary troops were busy preparing for an Independence Day parade when the rockets hit their camp, all of them landing in the parade ground. Officials in Miranshah confirmed the attack and the toll. They said 16 of the injured soldiers were admitted to hospitals in Miranshah and Bannu. The troops later resumed the Independence Day parade in the same ground after rescue activities were complete.
Officials said a similar rocket attack against the Scouts Fort in Razmak had also been but there had been no casualties in the second attack. The security forces shelled suspected hideouts of militants in the mountainous and unpopulated areas around Miranshah and Razmak after the attack. The officials said two militants had been killed and five wounded in the retaliatory acts.
However, the claims could not be confirmed independently because journalists are not allowed access to the area. So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attacks. Separately, a soldier was killed when landmine planted by terrorists exploded, and 6 militants were killed in retaliatory action by security forces on Sunday.
