Six people including two women and two children of a family were killed and eight others injured when the roof of their house collapsed while they were asleep on early Friday morning.
Mirpurkhas District Coordination Officer (DCO) Ghulam Hussain Memon said the rain was the cause of the incident.
He said the death toll in rain-related incidents in Mirpurkhas had risen to 10 during the last 48 hours.
Muhammad Akram, 60, his wife Khaanma, their children— Waseem, 24, Shaheen, 26, Salman, 3, and Alisha, 2, died on the spot when a major portion of the roof of their housed collapsed. Eight others of the same family identified as Aslam, Shereen, Nosheen, Hasnain, Noreen, Farzanan and a baby were seriously injured in the incident. The injured were shifted to the Mirpurkhas Civil Hospital.
The heavy rainfall which continued in Mirpurkhas and Umerkot district for the last 48 hours inundated the main roads and streets in both of the districts.
“At least 21 people died, most of them because of falling roofs during rains on Thursday night,” said Sajjad Haider Shah, an official at the disaster management authority in Sindh. Fifteen of the deaths occurred in the Mirpurkhas district, which was worst-affected, he said.
The Meteorological Office forecast more rain this week.
The district Badin in Sindh has received record rainfall of 295mm during the current monsoon spell which started on Wednesday, Chief Meteorologist Ghulam Rasool said on Friday.
He said the maximum rainfall of 121mm was recorded in Badin in 1936.
Areas of Mithi also received record rainfall of 436 millimetres during the spell, where maximum rainfall was recorded at 114mm in 2004.
