This is with reference to Malik’s letter titled ‘Some apprehensions’ published in your issue dated 13 June. Those who pulled the trigger on Sarfraz Shah, or on the five unarmed foreigners in Quetta, should be held responsible but it would be grossly unfair if those who recruited and trained them are not held accountable too. Remember that on 12 May, while the Rangers and police stood by, armed gangs of a political party killed scores of people and did not allow the Chief Justice of Supreme Court to come out of Karachi airport.
The orders to do so would have come directly from the superior authorities, otherwise those assigned to protect the lives and property of citizens of Pakistan would not have looked the other way. It is time that the mindset of those who sit in authority are held responsible for the criminal acts of those whom they command and those who recruit and train them. The DG Rangers Sindh and the IG Police Sindh are responsible for these acts of omission as they claim laurels for feats of those under their command. Have we not seen the manner in which sensitive security agencies and civil paramilitary forces like Rangers have been used by dictators to prolong his rule through intimidation and threats?
