Retracting the proposal submitted in 2009 which suggested an addition of one more reserved seat for women in Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has now suggested to the government to add more than one seat in both the houses of the parliament and to ensure the representation of women from FATA also, an official source told Pakistan Today.
He said that the proposals had been sent for consideration and if accepted, it would need a need a constitutional amendment by the Parliament. The official source further added that the ECP had suggested an addition of two more women seats. Currently, there is no women representative from FATA in the Upper House. The Senate currently consists of 100 members and if the said proposal were accepted and passed by the parliament, the total strength of the Upper House would become 102.
The source said that the suggestions stated above were the supplemental proposals of the ECP to the government which envisaged amendments in the Constitution for electoral reforms. He further added that the proposals had been sent to the Standing Committee for consideration, adding that the ECP had prepared a bill for the unification of electoral laws in the country.
