Unsung heroes?

The Pakistan Education Task force recently released its report on the Education Emergency in Pakistan. That report identified many problems with Pakistans education system and lack of teacher training and teacher absenteeism were prominent amongst them. No discussion on our educational problems can be complete without a discussion on the problems that teachers face.

A low student-to-teacher ratio is also one of the biggest problems with our public schools system. We target the teachers if a students performance is poor or if a child indulges in malpractices or misbehaviour during school hours. But have we ever thought whether the teacher is solely responsible for this? A teacher has to handle a class comprising of 30 to 35 pupils.

We have to understand that teachers are a very integral part of the education system and they need to be appreciated and respected. They have for very long been the unsung heroes of our society. The government should concentrate on better training, facilities and compensation for teachers so they can rightfully play their role in educating and grooming our next generation.
