Sindh lawmakers unanimously support Int’l Women’s Day

KARACHI – The Sindh Assembly passed a unanimous resolution on Monday to support the International Women’s Day being celebrated worldwide on today (Tuesday). Sindh Minister for Electric Power Shazia Marri moved the resolution and lawmakers from different parties delivered speeches, acknowledging women’s role in the development of the country.
The resolution stated, “This Assembly is proud to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the International Women’s Day on March 8, 2011, celebrated to honour the backbone of every society, and pays tribute to the dynamic women of Pakistan, who strive passionately for the betterment of the country and its future, despite numerous substantial impediments, be they ethnic, cultural, economic, social, linguistic, educational or political.
It takes pride in the perseverance and strength of Madr-e-Millat Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah and the selfless struggle leadership and unshakeable courage of Benazir Bhutto, appreciates the women empowerment policies, programmes and legislations of the present democratic government and resolves to further the struggle to establish a just and equitable environment conducive for the sustainable development of Pakistan.”
The lawmakers who spoke on the resolution included PPP’s Sassui Palijo, Nargis ND Khan, Tauqir Fatima Bhutto, Shehla Raza, Humera Alwani, Shama Mithani, Farzana Baloch, Farheen Mughal, Najma Saeed Chawla, Rai Naz Bozdar, Aesha Khoso, Rukhsana Shah, Shamim Ara Panwhar, Pir Mazharul Haq, Agha Siraj Durrani, Rafiq Engineer, Dr Zulfiqar Mirza, Dr Sikandar Mandhro and Anwar Maher Fayaz Butt; the opposition’s Nusrat Saher Abbasi, Marvi Rashdi, Nuzhat Pathan, Masroor Jatoi and Abdul Razzaque Rahimoon and the ANP’s Amanullah Mehsud.
Later, the House also passed a motion moved by the Amanullah Mehsud to condemn a media group’s CEO’s misbehaviour with a lawyer. PPP’s Rafiq Engineer earlier opposed the motion saying that the incident took place outside the court premises, however, his party members supported it after Education Minister Pir Mazharul Haq told Speaker Nisar Ahmed Khuhro that legislators should not stay silent on the maltreatment of a lawyer.
