Pakistan gain lead in Davis Cup

LAHORE – Pakistan’s ace tennis player Aisamul Haq Qureshi, with the support of Aqeel Khan, brought Pakistan back into contention by taking a 2-1 lead over Hong Kong in the Davis Cup Asia Oceania Zone Group II tie at Victoria Park in Hong Kong. Aisam, who lost the opening singles match earlier, paired up with Aqeel to win the doubles match on Saturday, while Aqeel won his singles to bring Pakistan on level terms with Hong Kong. The duo gave Pakistan a 2-1 lead over Hong Kong in the must win doubles match of the tie against Coenie Van Wyk and Jonathan Chu.
The Hong Kong pair extended some fight in the first set but went down in the next two. The Pakistan pair did not let the hosts settle and won the match 7(4)-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Pakistan are now only one win away from reaching the second round. Aisam will now meet Martin Sayer and Aqeel faces Hiu-Tung Yu in reverse singles today.
Results: Hiu-Tung Yu beat Aisam Qureshi 7-6(3) 4-6 6-7(2) 7-5 6-4, Aqeel Khan beat Martin Sayer 7-5, 7-5, 6-4, Aisam Qureshi-Aqeel Khan beat Jonathan Chu-Coenie Van Wyk 7-6(4), 6-4, 6-4.
