LAHORE – The power shortfall in the country crossed 1,800MW on Monday resulting in long hours of load shedding. Power outages crossed the four to eight hours mark while in many areas, electricity was closed for continuous intervals.
Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO) officials said that the shortfall increased because of an increase in power demand but in fact there was less demand because of pleasant weather. They said that power generation remained 10,121MW while demand 11,936 MW resulting in a shortfall of 1,815MW.
According to sources, there was not much demand on Sunday, as markets and offices were closed and PEPCO is giving wrong figures in this regard. Last Sunday, demand remained 11,435MW and but this week figures of PEPCO gave an entirely different picture and demand of 500MW was added.
“Weather in the country remained cold on Sunday and there was less demand of electricity, as compared to last Sunday, but even then PEPCO is saying that demand has increased,” sources said adding that in reality, power production has decreased in the last few days, which caused load shedding. The independent power producers (IPP) also decreased production to 4,342MW while production stood at 4,693MW and 5,093MW on Friday and Thursday respectively.
