The World Cup 2011 has finally begun. The spectacle staged at Dhaka was a reminder that we too would have been host if it werent for a host of factors which not only include the security situation but the debilitating ineptitude of our board. But these matters are best left for later.
Pakistan cricket is somewhere deep in the doldrums right now. But the stereotypical Pakistani cricket fan is a stubborn breed of human being. No matter how many times and how badly they are put through the wringer, they persevere and come World Cup time, they are again filled with hope and joy. The team is hitting a purple patch at the right time.
We have a decent pool of talent and the advantage of playing in near-home conditions. Not only do we have the support in these areas, we have none of the pressure that India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will have to put up with playing on home soil. Win-Win.
This World Cup is going to be a game-changer because the field is wide open and there are no clear favourites. A World Cup in the subcontinent is always greater than great because this is where people are passionate about the game. Great wickets and great turnouts ensure that there is as much fun on the field as off with the full-on desi celebrations in the stands.
I wish the best to the green shirts and hope that they will do us and themselves proud. Go Team Pakistan!
