ISLAMABAD – A full-court meeting of the Supreme Court on Monday passed a unanimous resolution in favour of reappointing Justice Khalilur Rehman Ramday and Justice Rehman Hussain Jaffery as ad-hoc judges of the apex court, a private TV channel reported. The meeting, held at the SC premises, supported Justice Ramday’s reappointment as the ad-hoc judge although he is retiring on February 17 after completing one-year tenure.
Earlier, he had retired as the permanent judge of the apex court on February 17, 2010, after which he was appointed as an ad-hoc judge on Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry’s insistence. Justice (r) Rehmat Hussain Jaffery, also a Supreme Court judge, had retired on November 22, 2010.
The meeting was informed that the number of pending cases at the principal seat and four registries of the apex court had increased during the last year. CJ presided over the meeting, which was attended by all the judges and Registrar Dr Faqir Hussain of the apex court.
The meeting noted that many important constitutional and other cases consumed much of the time. It cited that the 18th Amendment case was heard for over five months. Similarly, the cases of NRO review, the Bank of Punjab scam and matters like Haj scandal and Reko Diq were heard by larger benches.
